Too Hot to
Handle Report

The survey, on which the report is based, was carried out at the British Superbikes finals at Donington. We spoke to 370 of you and you were generous enough to spend around fifteen minutes of your time to answer our questionnaire.
We got some very interesting views from you about your bike, the roads and other road users!
The majority (85%) of you were male and aged between 30 and 39 years. Your favourite bikes are sports/superbikes and 97% of you ride them for sport or leisure doing an average of 5000 miles per year.
Most of you said that experience and things like concentration and commonsense made you a skilful rider.
From our point of view it was worrying to find that, when we asked you about your behaviour and that of other drivers on the roads, most of you said that other drivers don’t see you! In fact, when we looked at actual accident statistics we found that in over 60% of accidents the rider themselves lost control of the bike.
Although you also worry that diesel/oil spillages are a danger (and in just 1% of cases they were!) 82% of crashes involving two-wheelers occur on dry roads.
Hardly any of you mentioned the dangers of rural roads with bends yet over 40% of rider accidents occurred on this kind of road.
Are you prepared for the real risks out on the roads?
